Trowbridge Town Hall in Wiltshire is to receive £8.1 million to undergo a redevelopment in 2022, which will see its Grand Hall ballroom restored and the addition of three flexible spaces for small-scale performances.
The grade-II-listed building has been allocated nearly half of the £16.4 million awarded to Wiltshire Council as part of the government’s Future High Streets Fund.
The redevelopment aims to see the building’s Grand Hall ballroom, which previously hosted artists including the Who and Cat Stevens, restored and brought back into use for events.
David Lockwood, director at Trowbridge Town Hall Trust, said: “I am delighted that the Town Hall has been awarded this funding. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to restore the magnificent and iconic grade-II-listed building.
"Moreover, it can lead to a reimagined town centre, with community ownership and culture at its heart."
There will also be three smaller spaces that can be used for performance, community activity and development of work.
Spaces currently in use within the building include the Old Court, which is a flexible space used for theatre and other events, as well as other meeting rooms and small community spaces available for hire.
Trowbridge Town Hall already hosts a cultural programme including theatre, film, music and visual art.
The redevelopment aims to "enable the building to radically upscale the opportunities for culture at the heart of the town".
Members of the public will be able to give feedback on the plans during events at the Town Hall on January 27 and 28, 2022.
