The actor and voice coach talks to John Byrne about how she got her start in theatre and moved into teaching
It all began when I first took GCSE drama at school. The first project we worked on was Sweeney Todd. I already loved it, so it was easy for me to get invested. Performing on stage felt special, especially to have audiences understand your character and appreciate your art. I enjoyed being able to offer other people the experience of relating to someone.
I was offered the opportunity to do an MA in Professional Voice Practice. Now, I find coaching rewarding because I can offer a new perspective – one that can have an influence on a person’s life. It’s fulfilling to help other actors achieve their full potential.
Keep training, keep working on your craft and keep networking.
I would love to see more diversity and inclusivity on screen. A recent survey suggested that only 1.5% of British East Asian and South East Asian actors are on screen. People from diverse walks of life deserve a chance to recognise themselves in others.
Being able to build a company based on people’s passion for performing arts. Actors can come together to learn and be supportive of each other.
I believe in carving your own path because authenticity is your best asset. I am inspired by different people everyday, but it’s not about looking up to someone; it’s about finding a set of values you carry with you.
Have confidence within yourself, believe you can achieve and have the mental resilience to be able to bounce back quickly.
