Disney On ice is celebrating its 25th year with a top-notch family show full of skilful skaters, high-end production values and stunning costumes.
Selecting and distilling the plots of favourite Disney films The Lion King, Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid and Frozen, the resulting prime lines and very best songs are adeptly gestured and mimed by a skilled cast.
First stop is African savannah. Excitement levels peak at the Lion King’s Circle of Life as duetting lions Simba and Nala show off a range of lifts – spinning (her head swings perilously close to the rink floor), splits and thrown lifts – all amid perfect unison skating.
Peter Pan takes on more a theatrical setting with a split-level stage, flying wires, group scenes of pirates, and Tinkerbell’s famous pixie dust. Peter and his shadow land a fair few triple axels, showing off the jumping skills of this technically excellent cast.
With The Little Mermaid comes huge spectacle in the underwater scenes, complete with dancing starfish, bubbles, shells revealing mermaids, flying giant jellyfish and complicated group choreography.
Last but not least is a faithful retelling of Frozen with lots of snow, misty smoke tanks and Elsa’s magic glowing cape. Anna and Elsa are both strong on the pirouettes as they express the story and Olaf’s costume magnificently reflects the cartoon character.
This isn’t a show that merely relies on the famous brand to see them through and sell tickets – here there is technical perfection, miming skill and balletic flow sprinkled with a little Disney magic to create a wonderful family show.
