A 118-year-old message in a bottle has been discovered at Edinburgh’s King’s Theatre during redevelopment work.
The bottle – which was spotted by photographer and historian Mike Hume last week, and which King’s Theatre operator Capital Theatres’ posted a picture of on Instagram – contained a piece of paper dated to 1906, the same year the King’s Theatre opened.

The object was hidden behind one of the decorative crowns above the stage and has now been handed to the Scottish Conservation Studio for further investigation.
Hume said: “It’s crazy to think that this time capsule has been hiding in plain sight for nearly 120 years, silently bearing witness to every performance at the King’s.”
“[I] can’t wait to find out what’s inside. Maybe a new bottle goes up there for the next 120 years?”
The King’s Theatre closed in 2023 for a £40 million redevelopment and is expected to reopen in 2026.
