A writer and contributor to The Stage Awards’ winning project With Fire and Rage has been detained by Russian police in Ukraine.
Lutfiye Zudiyeva, a member of the indigenous Crimean Tartar population, was arrested on February 22 and charged with "abuse of freedom of mass information", Artists on the Frontline has revealed.
Zudiyeva has since been released and is awaiting two separate trials for the charges, which relate to Facebook posts dating back to 2021.
A journalist and mother, her work formed part of 2023’s With Fire and Rage project, an immersive audio experience following artists on the frontline in the midst of Ukraine’s war with Russia.
Created by Parade-Fest and Artists on the Frontline, and led by Veronika Skliarova and Zoe Lafferty, the project won Digital Project of the Year at The Stage Awards on January 29.
Speaking at that event, Lafferty had urged the industry to "stand in solidarity, utilise your power, share your platforms and give artists on the frontline the chance to share and tell their stories".

In a quote provided by Arts on the Frontline, Zudiyeva reflected on her previous arrest by Russian police in 2019, following the annexation of the Crimea in 2014.
She said: "They wanted to make me scared. But it was exactly the other way around. Surviving this meant I overcame my fear."
Lafferty said that Zudiveya’s work represented one of the "main contributors" to With Fire and Rage, and said "her story and testimony made up one of the main segments of the piece.
"She has continued to write and document, and now has been detained again [...] She is really very brave, she doesn’t take this as a warning. She continues to speak out," Lafferty said.
The targeting of journalists and artists within the Russo-Ukrainian war has been well-documented. The war officially began with the annexation of Crimea in 2014, although it escalated further in February 2022, when Russian forces invaded further into the country.
According to Reporters Without Borders and the Institute of Mass Information, at least 26 journalists were deliberately targeted with rifle or artillery fire in 2022.
Victoria Amelina, a writer turned war crimes researcher who was also part of With Fire And Rage, was killed by a rocket in the eastern city of Kramatorsk at the beginning of July 2023.
