The Independent Theatre Council has appointed Topher Campbell as it news chair.
Campbell, who is artistic director of film and theatre company Red Room, takes up his new post with immediate effect.
He has led Red Room since 2007 and is also the co-founder of arts organisation Rukus Federation.
Campbell replaces Emma Rees, executive director of People’s Palace Projects, and Rosie Hunter, executive director of Unlimited Theatre, who have been co-chairs since 2011.
Campbell said: “It’s good to be the chair while also being the CEO of a small independent theatre and film company because it shows that we’re representing very small businesses in the ITC. It’s important to support and reflect that membership.”
Charlotte Jones, chief executive of ITC, said: “Topher is interested in advocating for the sector and is part of the [arts campaigning] What Next? group. He is coming to this new position with a great amount of energy, excitement and passion for the sector so I’m very much looking forward to working with him.”
She added: “Topher’s election is very much a sign of the times because inevitably the arts world has a fight on its hands at the moment and needs to stand up for itself. He is the kind of chair we need to galvanise the sector and engage strongly in advocacy and politics.”
Campbell:
“I’m going to champion that side of the arts., particularly at the moment because of the coenminc situation and becaue smaller companies don’t awyas have the insfratrcutre to usstain themselves through this.”
The ITC to be a really representative, contemporary, progressiveo rganisatio nthat people really woan to get on board with, that speaks for its memenrs, that is member led and that also speask to audiences in terms of the importance of cultural workers and what we contribute to the UK in many ways.”
