BBC1 series Doctor Who has been named best drama at this year’s National Television Awards, with Matt Smith winning in the best drama performance section.
Other winners at the event, held tonight at the O2 in London, included Julie Hesmondhalgh, who won in the serial drama performance section. She won for her role as Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street, with the soap itself named best serial drama.
Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch was named best television detective, with Mrs Brown’s Boys winning the comedy prize and Ant and Dec named best entertainment presenters.
The presenters also won a special award marking their 25 years in television.
