Works on the roof of the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford are to begin later this month, with new money-saving insulation being added to help battle the rise in energy costs.
The £500,000 initiative will help to repair or replace more than 90% of the theatre’s flat roof, with maintenance and servicing of equipment on the roof, such as air-conditioning units, also being conducted.
Alongside this, some areas of the roof will be insulated, in order to help with the rise in energy costs and better equip the venue to maintain heat and improve the site’s sustainability.
The works are set to last until May 2023, with care being taken to minimise any disruption to the theatre and its scheduled programming.
Councillor Sarah Ferriby, healthy people and places portfolio holder, said: "These important works will preserve and protect Bradford’s iconic theatre and will be undertaken in a way that reduces any disruption.
"Maintaining our buildings in a well-organised and timely fashion prevents long-term damage and expense, and ensures they can be enjoyed by generations to come."
Bradford was declared the UK City of Culture 2025 earlier this year and Bradford Theatres also received £185,912 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund towards a programme that will explore under-represented histories at its two venues: the Alhambra Theatre and St George’s Hall.
