Course Outline:

Week One

• An introduction to skills for directing and pathways for skill development
• An overview of the steps in the timeline of making a theatre production
• How to analyse text: time, place, immediate circumstances, character biographies, events, and intentions
• Activities: close textual analysis, group discussion, setting of individual tasks, feedback

Week Two

• Student directors will explore practical rehearsal techniques, by preparing short scenes and working in rehearsal with actors. They will receive individual feedback on their work.
• Activities: group practical work, individual preparation, two-day rehearsal with actors, individual feedback on rehearsed scene, group plenary.
