As a Winona Ryder fan, Miracle Chance leapt at the opportunity to appear in Heathers the Musical. She tells Jamie Body about her “gross” pre-show ritual and why starring in Angelina Ballerina helped her to hone her performance skills...
Oh my God – I was so excited. I couldn’t believe it. I had seen the show a few times and had always said I wanted to have a go at playing Veronica Sawyer. She has so much depth and is so funny. Once I got the call with the job offer, I couldn’t wait to play the role but also to get stuck into the songs. I think the soundtrack is full of earworms; every song is great – it is genius. I am also a massive Winona Ryder fan. She is iconic. It’s fun trying to find those little mannerisms from her portrayal of the character in the film and bringing them to the stage version.
I think people love Heathers because the music is catchy and it instantly makes you feel as though you are part of that world. Everybody knows someone who reminds them of a character in the show or may see elements of themselves in one of the characters, whether it’s the clique or popular kids, the happy-go-lucky person, somebody struggling with something or the sporty people/jocks. Because there is that type of relatability, people are hooked and can find themselves in the show. Also, the film made it iconic, with phrases such as ‘how very’ and the colourful outfits.
It sounds gross, but I have to make sure I use mouthwash just before the show and spit in the boys’ changing room sink. I think it is because I did it on opening night and now I have to do it every time. The boys are always like: ‘Oh, here she comes.’ But yeah, that is my ritual.
Take the time to find what makes you unique and bring it to the forefront of whatever you do that is related to your career. Always show the most authentic and best version of yourself. Although there are a lot of people in the theatre industry, you are an individual, and your passion, uniqueness and talent will help you stand out.
My first show was Angelina Ballerina – the Mousical. It was a great job, especially for a fresh graduate. It helped me to understand how to tour with a show, how to navigate working in a company and how to cover roles in a show. Family theatre should not be looked down on. It gives you a chance to hone your skills, to perform and adds a credit to your CV.
