This summer, Disney Cruise Line launches its new ship, the Disney Wish, and with it a host of new opportunities to work with the entertainment technician teams that help bring the spectacular on-board shows to life. Entertainment technical operations production manager Glenn Sholdis tells The Stage what a new crew member can expect from the role
For an audience, Elsa’s snow magically falls from the ceiling, Peter Pan flies across the stage with the power of pixie dust, the Genie appears as if from nowhere and many more magical moments materialise in a seemingly effortless way.
But the hard-working and tireless team of entertainment technicians aboard a Disney Cruise Line ship know the secrets behind the magic. It’s these crew members, from cosmetology and costume technicians to riggers and audio techs, that bring beloved Disney stories to life on-board every day. Guests enjoy West End-style stage shows, interactive deck parties, character encounters, fireworks and much more thanks to these talented teams.
“As part of the ship-wide technical team, I’ve been a part of making magic by ensuring our characters can be heard and seen, as well as bringing fun and smiles to our guests,” says Scotty Thompson, a ship-wide technician on the Disney Wonder.
“On top of that, I have been able to get experience as a props and puppets technician. It has opened my world into another part of the ship that I was one day wishing I could get into. Making sure that our puppets are in top condition as well as ensuring that our performers have the right prop for the right part of a show has made me feel like an integral part of the team.”

Disney Cruise Line currently has four ships in its fleet and you’ll find a team of entertainment technicians on each one. On these ships, each has its own special stage show along with several you can find across them all. These shows include Disney’s Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular, Tangled: The Musical, The Golden Mickeys and many more.
With the debut of the fleet’s newest ship the Disney Wish this summer, two new shows will make their mark on the stage: a Broadway-style take on Walt Disney Animation Studios’ The Little Mermaid and an original musical spectacular, Disney Seas the Adventure, not to mention a new night-time spectacular, Pirate’s Rockin’ Parlay Party, which will feature live music, remarkable stunts and special effects.
Thanks to this upcoming expansion of its fleet, Disney Cruise Line is actively looking to add new members to the crew on-board the Disney Wish and its other four ships.

“The ideal candidate to fill the entertainment technician positions on-board our ships is someone who enjoys working as part of a team, is diverse in previous technical experience while looking to utilise their existing technical knowledge, and will equally be wanting to learn, grow and expand that knowledge,” says Glenn Sholdis, entertainment technical operations production manager for Disney Cruise Line, adding that they are looking for “someone who is excited to work on a range of different shows and entertainment offerings and help to deliver the magical entertainment experiences to our guests”.
Sholdis says new crew members have a lot to look forward to when joining the crew, but what they will find most exciting will be the future opportunities available with Disney, as the fleet – and the technology used on-board – continues to grow.
“With the current fleet expansion that is underway, we have a range of positions available in numerous technical disciplines," he adds. "There is also the opportunity for our technicians to broaden their technical knowledge and skill set and potentially move into other technical areas should they wish to explore those. Also, they’ll be working with some of the latest technical equipment available on the market."
