London’s Young Vic Theatre is calling for D/deaf and disabled directors to apply for its 2018 Genesis Future Directors Award.
The emerging directors award has run for more than 10 years, but this is the first time the theatre has specifically called for applications from D/deaf and disabled theatremakers.
On its website, the Young Vic has said it wants to strengthen its commitment to diversity and that the 2018 Genesis Award will be an opportunity for the theatre to meet and work with disabled artists.
The winning director will have the opportunity to work on a play of their choice for four weeks with up to three actors and a full creative team, culminating in 10 performances to a paying audience.
Applications are encouraged from D/deaf and disabled emerging directors as well as emerging directors who want to work with a cast of D/deaf and disabled actors.
Non-disabled directors who apply should be able to demonstrate a commitment to diversity in their previous work.
Sue Emmas, associate artistic director at the Young Vic said: “The Young Vic has a deep commitment to diversity and we want to cast more disabled actors on our stages and have more disabled artists making work in our building.
“The 2018 Genesis Future Directors Award is a chance for us to meet and work with D/deaf and disabled directors or those who want to partner with D/deaf and disabled actors or creative teams. We want to break down barriers and give the talent that exists the opportunity to make work.”
More information and how to apply can be found here, with the deadline for applications June 12.
