Andrew Lloyd Webber’s revival of Starlight Express was the biggest winner at this year’s WhatsOnStage Awards, triumphing in seven of the nine categories it was nominated in.
David Tennant and Imelda Staunton were crowned best performers for their respective turns in Macbeth and Hello, Dolly! at the 25th annual ceremony, held at the London Palladium on February 9.
Tennant’s Macbeth, which ran at the Donmar Warehouse and the Harold Pinter Theatre, emerged as the dominant play with three wins including best play revival, while Spirited Away scooped the prize for best new play.
Other winners included Emma Rice, who was named best director for The Buddha of Suburbia; Mean Girls, which won best new musical, and Chichester Festival Theatre’s revival of Oliver!, which scooped the gong for best regional production.
