West End theatres where Gavin Creel performed during his career will dim their lights in honour of the actor, The Stage has learned.
The Society of London Theatre has confirmed to The Stage that the Adelphi, where Creel performed in Waitress, as well as the Prince of Wales, where he starred in The Book of Mormon, the Prince Edward - where he appeared in Mary Poppins - and the Gielgud, where he was part of Hair, will all dim their lights in his honour.
SOLT has been liaising with the Broadway League to coordinate a date when the lights will be dimmed in the actor’s memory.
The date is to be decided in consultation with Creel’s family.
Creel will also be honoured at next year’s Olivier Awards.
Creel died earlier this week, aged 48.
He was predominantly known for his work on Broadway, but performed in the UK in The Book of Mormon, in 2013, which earned him an Olivier award in 2014 for best actor in a musical.
He also starred in Waitress in the West End, alongside its creator Sara Bareilles, in 2020.
The Book of Mormon producer Sonia Friedman described Creel as "one of the greatest actors and musicians I have ever worked with".
"I admired and revered him, not only as an artist but as a deeply beautiful person. My time working with him on The Book of Mormon remains one of the joys of my producing career," she said, adding that his "legacy to the UK and American theatre looms large".
