Tammy Faye, the musical brainchild of Elton John, James Graham and Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears, will close on Broadway after less than a month.
Rupert Goold’s production, which follows the TV evangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, will have its final staging at New York’s Palace Theatre on December 8, having opened at the venue on November 14.
Tammy Faye transferred to Broadway following its world premiere at London’s Almeida Theatre in 2022, which earned it a nod for best new musical at the 2023 Olivier Awards.

However, in the week ending November 17, 2024, the musical grossed $374,371 on Broadway with an overall attendance of 5,732 – just 63% of the venue’s full capacity. The show did not fill more than two thirds of its audience capacity throughout November.
Now, the production has announced it will close on Broadway in just over two weeks’ time, after 29 performances (excluding previews).
Music for Tammy Faye, which explores the evangelist’s controversial rise to TV fame and her championing of gay rights, is by John, with lyrics by Shears and a book by Graham.
Katie Brayben leads the cast for the remainder of the musical’s Broadway run as Tammy Faye Bakker, alongside Christian Borle as Jim Bakker and Michael Cerveris as Jerry Falwell.
Meanwhile John’s musical version of The Devil Wears Prada is now playing at the Dominion theatre in London, while Graham’s latest play, Punch, transfers to London’s Young Vic from the Nottingham Playhouse next spring.
