Shakespeare’s Globe has picked up eight Tony Awards nominations, with Michael Grandage’s production of The Cripple of Inishmaan receiving six.
Twelfth Night, first staged by Shakespeare’s Globe in the UK in 2012 and then commercially produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, picked up a total of seven nominations, with actor Mark Rylance earning a supporting actor nod for his work as Olivia in the show and co-star Samuel Barnett receiving a best actor nomination for his portrayal of Viola. This marks Barnett’s first Tony nomination though he has previously won the Drama Desk award for best featured actor in a play for The History Boys.
Cast members Stephen Fry and Paul Chahidi also picked up supporting actor nods, with director Tim Carroll also nominated and the show itself up for best revival.
Rylance meanwhile also received a best actor nomination for his performance in the title role of Richard III. In this category he faces competition from Chris O’Dowd, for Of Mice and Men. Rylance has previously won in this category for his work Boeing-Boeing in 2008 and in Jerusalem in 2011.
Jenny Tiramani, meanwhile, is nominated for her costumes on Twelfth Night.
Among Carroll’s competition in the director category this year will be John Tiffany, for The Glass Menagerie, and Michael Grandage, who earned a nomination for his work in The Cripple of Inishmaan.
The Cripple of Inishmaan has also been nominated for best revival and Sarah Greene has been nominated in the featured actress section. The play has also picked up nominations for Christopher Oram’s set, Paule Constable’s lighting and Alex Baranowski’s sound design.
Other Brits picking up nominations include Tim Rice, for his lyrics on Aladdin, Es Devlin, who picked up a nomination for her design of Machinal, Julian Crouch, who is nominated for his design of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and Mick Potter, who is up for his sound design on Les Miserables. Sophie Okonedo is nominated for A Raisin in the Sun.
Among those overlooked this year were Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen for their work in Waiting for Godot and No Man’s Land.
The musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Murder has picked up a total of 10 nominations, including a nod for best musical.
Actor Audra McDonald has received a nod for best actress in a play for her portrayal of Billy Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill. If she wins in this category, it would mark her sixth acting Tony, the most of any actress.
Hosting the Tony Awards this year will be actor Hugh Jackman. Presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, the Tony Awards will be broadcast live from New York Radio City Musical Hall on June 8.
