Ralph Fiennes’ turn as Richard III in the forthcoming Almeida Theatre production will be broadcast to cinemas globally as part of a new strand of live screenings planned by the venue.
Also starring Vanessa Redgrave, the play will be broadcast to cinemas in partnership with distributor Picturehouse Entertainment on July 21.
It launches Almeida Theatre Live, which the venue said it hoped would lead to more of its productions coming to cinemas and reaching a wider audience.
Richard III will be filmed using multiple cameras and be brought to the screen by production company Illuminations, which has previously filmed David Tennant’s Hamlet and Patrick Stewart’s Macbeth.
Rupert Goold, who is directing Richard III, said: “The chance to take the work of the Almeida to international audiences via live cinema screening is a new and timely venture for us that I’m extremely excited about.”
Picturehouse Entertainment head of business affairs Alice Frain said Richard III would be the “perfect start to the Almeida Live broadcasts”.
Picturehouse Entertainment has previously brought the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Shakespeare Live! to cinemas.
