The Critics’ Circle Drama Section is to present its annual Theatre Awards at the National Theatre for the first time.
The prizes, the only gongs to be entirely voted for by professional theatre critics based in the UK, will be handed out at the London South Bank venue on March 27.
Last year’s awards took place at West End theatre @sohoplace, with winners including Andrew Scott and Sophie Okonedo.
The Critics’ Circle announced the new venue alongside their nominees for the Empty Space... Peter Brook Award, an accolade aimed at recognising theatres exemplifying the spirit of director Peter Brook.
Those put up for the prize include Cirencester’s Barn Theatre and Summerhall in Edinburgh, as well as the Yard in London and Northampton’s Royal and Derngate.

The winners of the remaining nine awards will be announced at the end of this month. Among the prizes being contested at the ceremony will be best director, the Michael Billington award for best new play, the most promising playwright award and best actor and actress.
Chair of the Critics’ Circle Drama Section, Rosemary Waugh, said: "At a time when we hear so many negative stories about the arts and theatre industries in Britain, it’s a real joy to organise an event that purely celebrates the talent, creativity and brilliance – and resilience – of actors, playwrights, directors and designers.
"It’s a myth that critics enjoy panning shows – what we really love is being able to loudly sing the praises of the plays and musicals we think are truly excellent. The breadth and variety of the votes for this year’s awards really demonstrated the wide-reaching knowledge and passions of our membership, and the winners are all extremely deserving. I can’t wait to celebrate with them all."
