Hip hop artist Ivan Blackstock and Chinese company Tao Dance Theatre are among the performers featuring at this year’s Dance Umbrella festival, which stages works across London venues.
The programme, which includes two world and five UK premieres, marks the first under the leadership of artistic director Emma Gladstone – who succeeded previous director Betsy Gregory after seven years in post.
Blackstock’s A Harlem Dream is a world premiere and the festival’s first hip hop commission. It is co-presented by the Young Vic, where the show runs from October 20 to 31.
Tao Dance Theatre will perform a double bill, called 6 and 7, at Sadler’s Wells, which will be the company’s first time appearing on the venue’s main stage. It runs on October 20 and 21.
Flamenco dancer Rocio Molina’s work Bosque Ardora will run from October 16 to 18 at the Barbican and the festival will also take interactive family show Shiny – by dance artists Oksana Tyminksa and Liz Clark – on its first tour of outer London arts centres. It will visit the Albany, ArtsDepot, Stratford Circus and Watermans from October 19 to 27.
There will also be a triple bill for children between the ages of eight and 12 from choreographers Wayne McGregor, Hege Haagenrud and hip hop duet AP15. The show will be staged at the Unicorn Theatre on October 28 and 29.
Dance Umbrella 2014 takes place across 14 venues from October 14 to 31.
