Curious Incident bags US Outer Critics Circle awards

The Broadway production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time led the winners of the 2015 Outer Critics Circle Awards, receiving five prizes.

It has been awarded outstanding new Broadway play, with Marianne Elliott named outstanding director of a play, Bunny Christie winning outstanding set design, and Paule Constable receiving the prize for outstanding lighting design. Alex Sharp won outstanding actor in a play.

Other winners included Helen Mirren, who won outstanding actress in a play, and Richard McCabe, who won the outstanding featured actor in a play category, both for The Audience. There were two prizes for Christopher Wheeldon, who won outstanding director of a musical and outstanding choreographer for An American in Paris, while Jim Dale received the outstanding solo performance award for Just Jim Dale, which opens in London this month.

The musical Hamilton received three awards, but the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Wolf Hall, which had seven nominations, did not receive any awards.

The Outer Critics Circle is an organisation of writers and commentators on theatre in New York. The awards will be presented in a ceremony on May 21.
