Boundless Theatre is to employ four co-leaders to job share the roles of artistic director, chief executive and executive director as part of a restructure, following the confirmation of Arts Council England national portfolio funding for the next three years.
The organisation, which creates work with and for audiences aged 15 to 25, is currently led by artistic director and chief executive Rob Drummer and executive director (maternity cover) Ellie Claughton.
Drummer and Van Piet will continue in their roles, working alongside the four new co-leaders.
The new leadership roles, which will be aimed at young people aged 18 to 25, will be fully paid and aim to allow the company to test how to "further embed core principles of co-creation and co-leadership into [its] work".
Drummer said: "We’re on a fascinating journey at Boundless, which started with establishing our advisory group of 15 to 25-year-olds in 2016, and now includes sharing the two most senior roles in our organisation with those who may not otherwise be taken seriously as leaders.
"With the scaffolding to support them and the permission to get some of it wrong, I am sure that the outcomes will fundamentally change us as a company and, I hope, inspire others to join us in finding new ways to support our future leaders – right now."
Additionally, Boundless has also announced that it will travel across the UK over the next three years with Boundless Boxes – pop-up spaces that will be requested, constructed and programmed by young people.
The spaces will be piloted in 2023 with a group of trainee project managers from Lambeth.
Boundless has also announced a new playwriting prize in partnership with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, working in association with the Museum of Youth Culture.
The Big Boundless Show Prize will reward a theatremaker or writer with a full commission and a bespoke artistic development journey, as well as having the winning play produced at Guildhall School.
