ATG Entertainment is to construct a 1,800-seat theatre in the heart of Vienna, with the aim of it housing a top-tier programme of musicals at the venue.
The Theater im Prater will join the company’s portfolio of continental European venues alongside Hamburg’s Mehr! Theater am Großmarkt and Admiralspalast in Berlin.
Its proponents say it represents the largest privately financed theatre project of the past century.
Joachim Hilke, chief executive of ATG Entertainment in Europe, announced the project alongside Viennese city councillor Peter Hanke, with the plans forged by a strategic alliance between ATGE, local government and European entertainment group Wien Holding.
The theatre is expected to open at the end of 2027.
The cost of building the venue – an exact figure for which has not been shared – is being borne solely by ATG Entertainment.
Hilke said the theatre would "strengthen Vienna’s reputation as a musical and cultural metropolis" within Europe.
He said: "We are very pleased to be building a world-class theatre in the Prater here in Vienna.
"ATG Entertainment would like to present outstanding and spectacular shows to the discerning audiences in Vienna, as well as to the many musical tourists."
