Arenes – Centre for Contemporary Theatre

Freedom and Theatre are the two pillars that guide our creation, training and dissemination activities. 

These two concepts move us by the importance that, in interaction, they produce in the society in which we live, contributing to the growth and improvement of individuals in the pursuit of a humanity project, shared through investment in creativity based on difference and the ability to changing the worlds we live in. 

We believe that the daily exercise of conquering individual freedom goes hand in hand with increasing the freedom of those around us. 

This is the binomial that delimits and defines the quality and ambition of what we are and what we desire: that others may be increasingly free. 

Founded 21 years ago, in 2002, A Companhia João Garcia Miguel is a contemporary artistic creation company that researches artistic and creative development in performing arts, explored in theatre. In the company’s path, the search for a difference, a uniqueness, accompany each new creation. Our creations have been distinguished and awarded several times, most recently in 2014 with the SPA Award for Best Theatre Show, with the play Yerma. Cia JGM is a structure financed by the Government of Portugal; Secretary of State for Culture; DGARTES. 

The Arenes – Centre for Contemporary Theatre aims to further our activities into education in an all-inclusive trans-national faculty of industry-active teachers at the forefront of contemporary theatre and cinema.
